The surmaster is a drone synth that emulates a string instrument (presumably a Hindustani instrument called Surbahar) using four 555 timer oscillators and a step sequencer to pluck each "string" one after another. For each string the pitch can be tuned. Global settings include string decay (pluck) volume and tone. Strings can be disabled using switches.
Hacking
The original speaker output was replaced by a 1/4 inch audio jack. The 230V input was replaced by a safer 12V DC in jack. Originally, the main PCB was balanced between styrofoam blocks and the speaker. Threaded studs were added for better mounting of the board to the enclosure.
