Spacestate is the little service that knows whether Pixelbar is open or closed. It stores the current state, keeps a history of changes, and serves the SpaceAPI document that directories and apps use to show our status.
It's a TypeScript rewrite of the old SpaceAPI and spacestate PHP scripts.
| Spacestate is often confused with the Spacestate Switch, which is a physical button that notifies this service when someone presses it to open or close the hackerspace. |
What it does
- Reports whether the space is open or closed
- Allows external state changes via the API
- Keeps a history of state changes
- Serves our SpaceAPI document, which is how hackerspaces around the world declare their attributes

Good to know
- Reading the state is open to everyone. Changing it needs an API key, which the maintainer & board hands out.
- New integrations should use the REST endpoints. The legacy endpoints are temporary and only there for older hardware while a migration is in process.
- It runs on Azure Container Apps, set up with Terraform. Releases and deploys go through GitHub Actions; the GitHub repo is the source of truth
